1The Spark

A translation table at church that turned into a movement.

Imagine arriving in a new country with the dream of giving your children a better future — only to discover that the path to their academic success is blocked by a language you do not fully speak and a system you do not yet understand. That was my mother's story. It was the story of the tías and abuelas who sat next to her in parent meetings, quietly nodding along. Every Sunday after service I would translate school emails, GPA scales, and financial-aid forms at the church coffee table. One afternoon a mother started crying because she didn't know her daughter had missed a scholarship deadline. That was the moment I stopped translating one family at a time and started building something the whole community could use.

The problem

Spanish-speaking families in Central Florida face three overlapping barriers to their children's education: a disconnect from how the U.S. high school system actually works, language isolation at home when it's time to plan for college, and missed scholarships and opportunities because information arrives too late — or in a language parents can't fully act on. The result is capable students whose futures depend on whether their parents happen to know the right English-speaking person at the right time.

2Mission & Community

A bilingual bridge for the families who raised me.

To close the information gap for Spanish-speaking families by creating a practical, bilingual pathway — booklets, workshops, and partnerships — that turns confused parents into confident co-planners of their children's academic future.

Who it serves

  • 01Spanish-speaking parents navigating U.S. high school for the first time
  • 02Bilingual teens caught between translating for their families and planning their own futures
  • 03First-generation college applicants working through the Common App without supervision at home
  • 04Church and community leaders who want a ready-made model they can host in their own space

3What I Built

A safe and bilingual space to provide tools and information about the school system.

  • Two original Spanish-language booklets — including 'Recorriendo el Common App' — written from the ground up
  • A recurring workshop series hosted at Family Church with 50+ average attendees (parents and teens together)
  • Bilingual flyers, presentation decks, and printable worksheets that other youth leaders can reuse
  • An ongoing bilingual support network on Instagram and private WhatsApp groups — active seven days a week
  • Partnerships with Spanish-speaking educational consultants and guest counselors who join workshops pro bono

5Reflection & Next

"Bridging the Gaps taught me that leadership in my community doesn't look like a stage — it looks like a folding table at the back of the church with a stack of Spanish booklets on it. I learned to write, translate, present, and follow up. I learned that the parents who thanked me the most were the ones I simply listened to first. Most of all, I learned that the psychiatrist I want to become already lives in the way I run these workshops: bilingual, patient, and unwilling to let language be the reason someone falls through the cracks."

Nicole Pina Fernandez

Where Bridging the Gaps goes next.

  1. 1

Write more step-by-step booklets on other subjects of interest to the community

  2. 2

Train a second cohort of bilingual high school mentors so the program continues after I graduate

  3. 3

Create more workshops and expand to other community centers
